Here are my answers....Rose
1. My job title is Key Makeup Artist / Stylist.
2. Being a key make-up artist, my job may entails a variety of tasks, such as special-effects make-up, wigs, hairstyles, false teeth, wardrobe, etc. Not to mention providing supplies and work force needed for the job.
3. My job wasn't really a choice, I kind of grew with it. I've always enjoyed being creative and artistic and I love fashion, so since I was in high school I've always chosen to work with the theatre because it was a good outlet for me and I've always applied for jobs dealing with make up. I actually started as a little girl by cutting my doll's hair and putting my mom's makeup on our pets!
4. My first paid job started when I was in high school. I was about 14 years old. I was a representitive for Bonne Bell Cosmetics and on the J.C. Penny's junior fashion board. Everything just grew from there. I'm now in my middle 40's so I guess I've been in this business for about 30 years.
5. On this question, it's all of the above! Enjoyment, because I get to meet a lot of interesting people. The money is good, a makeup artist can make into the 6 figures, if they are good. I get to pick and choose when I want to work and my work is published. It's really cool to see ads I've done on the billboards, magazines, and sides of buses. I also get to travel. I've practially been around the world with my job.
6a. What I enjoy most about my job is being my own boss. Making my clients happy with my work, so they can make money. I get to go to really cool parties and hang out with really cool people.
6b. What I enjoy least (and this is the real downside) is advertising myself, getting the work, and billings (getting paid). Not to mention you have to do bookkeeping and taxes as an independent contractor. Oh, and have I mentioned there's a lot of jealous people who want my job. This is a very competitive field and I always have to watch my back!
7. I feel the more education you have, the better. Being licensed is extremely important, expecially if you are dealing with hair. Remember, the more versatile you are, the more hireable you are, so in essence the training never stops. You just get better. Finding apprenticeship work in this field IS the key.
8. Yes, I LOVE my job! I'd do it even if I wasn't paid, but still like making money.
9. I'm married with a 14 year old son (not interested in make up). I'm also married to my business. My husband (software engineer) helps me with my books, billings, website, and ads. They choose time off and vacation around my work schedule. I have always put my work first which I know I may regret someday but for now, that's life and I'm available to my job 24/7.
